7 Ways to Plug Into Rowing Workouts

Some days, it helps not to be laser-focused on your Performance Monitor data so you can better enjoy your row. While it can be fun to zone out to your favorite Netflix instead of chasing PRs, consider trying a coached workout.

Trainers and coaches can push you to improve your technique and provide technical advice. Time flies as you row along to a leader who structures your warm-up, workout and cool down. Many of these resources don’t require any connection to the Performance Monitor—just click on the link and go! Your metres can still be entered via ErgData (or manually) to the online logbook, where they count toward your workout totals. All metres between American Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve advance your progress in the Holiday Challenge!

Our Smartphone Cradle can help to bring these experiences close at hand: just open the video or app on your smartphone, mount it above your Performance Monitor, and it’s easy to watch (or listen) as you row along. The RowErg Tablet Mount gives you a bigger viewing space with a secure bracket and minimal shaking.

YouTube Favorites

Go Row
British Rowing hosts an indoor rowing exercise class called “Go Row” that’s available anytime on YouTube. The original workout is 20 minutes and guides you through a workout with helpful tidbits on stroke rate and intensity. There are several additional workouts to choose from. This free resource helps you to master indoor rowing and is suitable for beginners.

KiwiPair Indoor Rowing
Eric Murray, one of the most decorated oarsmen of all time, hosts a series of YouTube workouts you can join from your own home or gym. His no-frills approach is hosted in his workout room (or sometimes, in his barn—complete with goats!), where he prefers to row barefoot. Murray’s coaching is reminiscent of his time in a boat and offers many cues that a coxswain might provide. The style and workouts will likely feel recognizable for on water athletes or those who have some experience working with stroke rate and intensity.

Regatta Footage
Many on water athletes mount videos to their boats and share this footage online; this gives an authentic view of famous race courses around the world such as the Head Of The Charles® Regatta (Boston, MA), Henley Royal Regatta (UK), and many others. Choose your favorite race course and tour the world.

Dark Horse Rowing
Trainer Shane Farmer offers coaching and advice through Dark Horse Rowing. Get started with a basic rowing machine workout for beginners, try a 5-minute weight loss working or find your 500m sprint speed. His workouts are free and there are options for every level of athlete.
