Individual Record Requirements

Requirements

All World and national records must be:

  • Rowed on a Concept2 Indoor Rower, with or without Slides, or on a Dynamic Indoor Rower. This equipment must sit on a level surface. Modifications to the machine that alter its performance are not allowed. Please check with Concept2 if you are unsure.
  • Single distance or timed pieces (no interval pieces).
  • Started from a non-moving flywheel.

All records (with the exception of the static indoor rower 2000 metres, see below) must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  1. Verified with a verification code obtained for the piece from the PM3, PM4 or PM5. Pieces that are uploaded directly from ErgData or your LogCard or USB flash drive via the Concept2 Utility are automatically considered verified.
  2. OR

  3. Rowed in public with witnesses present who can be reached for confirmation of the performance. “Public” is defined as a health club, fitness center, rowing club, indoor rowing race, trade show or regatta where Concept2 is present, school, university or special event in a public setting (for example, a fundraiser in a mall).
  4. OR

  5. Recorded on video. It must be one continuous video shot. It must include setting up the workout on the monitor, all the rowing and afterward, the workout displayed in the monitor Memory (not the last screen of the workout).

In addition to the above requirements, all adaptive records must also provide one of the following:

  1. A completed Physician’s Sport Category Form
  2. OR

  3. Proof of sport category certification from an international (FISA) or a national governing body for para rowing (Concept2 reserves the right to require this proof from FISA or a national governing body for para rowing instead of the Physician's Sport Category Form.)

Ultra-distance records may have the monitor set for an interval workout. For more information, see the Ultra-Distance Records section below.

Note that a photo of the PM screen is not an acceptable form of verification unless the verification code is displayed on the screen as well.

Contact Us

Please contact us if you have broken a record and met the requirements outlined on this page. If you are unsure about the requirements, we strongly encourage you to contact us before any record attempt. Concept2 reserves the right to not accept a row as a record. In exceptional circumstances, you may be required to demonstrate your performance at an independent venue under observation.

Australian Records

Australian records are only recognised for the following distances:

100m
500m
1000m
2000m

Please note, Slides or a Dynamic Indoor Rower cannot be used for Australian records. All Australian record attempts must be rowed on a static Concept2 Indoor Rower.

2000 Metre Requirements

All static indoor rower 2000 metre record-breaking times must be rowed at a Concept2 sanctioned indoor rowing event with witnesses present. Record-breaking times for the 2000 metre distance done using a Dynamic or Slides do not need to be rowed at a sanctioned indoor rowing event, but they must be validated by one of the numbered requirements listed above.

Online 2000 Metre Requirements

Online race records for 2000m do not count unless they are approved beforehand by Concept2. Please check with Concept2 if in doubt at virtualracing@concept2.com.

The athlete must submit a video of the row to Concept2. This must be a a single take that includes a close-up of the monitor before the start, a clear view of the athlete and erg throughout the race, and a close-up of the monitor after the finish.

Documentation to confirm age must be made available upon request.

Lightweights must be weighed-in no earlier than two hours before their race, under independent supervision, on approved scales. Personal scales with family or friends as witness will not count. Weigh-in should satisfy the same level of scrutiny as at a venue race.

For para records, proof of sport category certification must come from an international (FISA) or a national governing body.

Weight Requirements

In accordance with regulations from on water events and indoor rowing championships around the world, lightweights must be weighed in no earlier than two hours before their race. Records from lightweights weighed prior to two hours before their row will not be recognized.

  • Heavyweight Women: > 135 lbs (61.6kg)
  • Lightweight Men: <= 165lbs (75kg)

Ultra-Distance Records

There are additional requirements/guidelines for the following records:

Individual Million Metre Row

  1. If using a PM3, PM4 or PM5, set the monitor using Variable Intervals. On the Main Menu, choose Select Workout > New Workout > Intervals: Variable. This enables you to set one distance interval of 900,000 metres and one distance interval of 100,000 metres with a rest interval of 0:00. If using a PM3, it is recommended that you upgrade to firmware version 88 or above. Be aware that the monitor will automatically shut down after a couple of minutes of inactivity, so you will have to reset the monitor after rest breaks unless you have someone press the Display or Change Display button to keep the PM alive.
  2. On a PM2, the monitor will count metres up to 99,999, then start at 0 again, so be sure to keep track of the flips back to 0. You'll need 10 of them!
  3. We recommend you take regular rests throughout the row, and the flywheel can stop spinning before the target is reached; however, your final time must include the periods when the wheel is not spinning.
  4. Keep a record of your row, including the start time and finish time of each rowing session, and the metres rowed in each session. Have the log signed by a witness who can verify your performance.
  5. Send us the results from your USB flash drive or LogCard in the form of a .csv file, or send your signed manual record along with a photo, if possible, and copies of or links to any publicity that your record attempt received.
  6. New records will be recognized with a special certificate of achievement, a Concept2 T-shirt and a pair of Concept2 rowing shorts.

Individual 24 Hour Row

  1. Use a Concept2 Indoor Rower with Performance Monitor (PM2, PM3, PM4 or PM5).
  2. The PM3, PM4 and PM5 will count up to 50,000 before it flips back to 0. Alternatively, on the Main Menu, choose Select Workout > New Workout > Intervals: Variable. This will enable you to set a single time interval of 24 hours, with a rest interval of 0:00. If using a PM3, it is recommended that you upgrade to a PM3 firmware version of 88 or above. Be aware that the monitor will automatically shut down after a couple of minutes of inactivity, so you will have to reset the monitor after rest breaks unless you have someone press the Display or Change Display button to keep the PM alive.
  3. The PM2 monitor will count metres up to 99,999, then start at 0 again, so be sure to keep track of the flips back to 0.
  4. You must row within each hour of the 24 hours in order for the attempt to qualify as a 24 hour row. We recommend you take regular rests throughout the row, and the flywheel can stop spinning.
  5. Keep a record of your row. You should have your support crew keep a record of how long (time) and how far (metres) you row each hour, and of course cumulative metres rowed. Have the log signed by a witness who can verify your performance.
  6. Send us the results from your USB flash drive or LogCard in the form of a .csv file, or send your signed manual record along with a photo, if possible, and copies of or links to any publicity that your record attempt received.
  7. New records will be recognized with a special certificate of achievement, a Concept2 T-shirt and a pair of Concept2 rowing shorts.

Individual Longest Continual Row

  1. Use a Concept2 Indoor Rower with Performance Monitor (PM2, PM3, PM4 or PM5).
  2. The PM3, PM4 and PM5 will count up to 50,000 before it flips back to 0.
  4. Important: You must row at least 50 minutes in each and every hour in order to call this a “continuous” row. You are allowed to take up to 10 minutes of rest in each hour. We recommend you take regular rests throughout the row, and the flywheel can stop spinning. Any rest time taken counts toward your elapsed time.
  5. Keep a record of your row. Individuals should have their support crew keep a record of how long (time) and how far (metres) they row each hour, and of course cumulative metres rowed.

  1. Use a Concept2 Indoor Rower with Performance Monitor (PM2, PM3, PM4 or PM5).
  2. If using a PM3, PM4 or PM5, on the Main Menu, choose Select Workout > New Workout > Intervals: Variable. This will enable you to set a single distance interval of 100,000 metres, with a rest interval of 0:00.
  3. If using a PM2, set the monitor for 99,999 metres (that’s as high as it goes).
  4. We recommend you take regular rests throughout the row, and the flywheel can stop spinning before the target is reached; however, your final time must include the periods when the wheel is not spinning.
  5. Keep a record of your row, including the start time and finish time of each rowing session, and the metres rowed in each session. Have the log signed by a witness who can verify your performance.
  6. Send us the results from your USB flash drive or LogCard in the form of a .csv file, or send your signed manual record along with a photo, if possible, and copies of or links to any publicity that your record attempt received.
  7. New records will be recognized with a special certificate of achievement.
