If you are looking for an excuse to start exercising, get back on your Erg, or ramp up your fitness routine, this is your nudge to start now! With the pressure of New Year’s Resolutions, people often find they are not able to keep up their goals, or set expectations too high, or it just is not the right time. If you are feeling excited about getting into a routine, or need a gentle push, this is that push. Whether you are reading this in December, January, or the middle of the year, if it feels right to kick things off, you should.
But why is starting something new or starting over so hard? We start a new workout routine, start a new sleep schedule, or a new diet, and it's hard to keep it up. Within a few weeks we are back to our old ways. That is unless it becomes routine. But that takes nearly two months on average for new behaviors to become automatic according to research. This happens because our brains are fighting to keep familiarity and predictability. This is also due to the fear of failure and perfection. Acknowledging these barriers when starting new habits is important to making these new paths feel more manageable. Having techniques to set yourself up for success is also key. For example, these might be setting small, achievable goals, creating a plan and telling others about your goal, celebrating milestones along the way to a larger goal, and practicing self-compassion during the process. Below, see how we use these methods with tools that Concept2 offers all our users at no cost.
For many, January 1st is not just another date on the calendar. It marks the beginning of the new calendar year and new possibilities. But, why does one single day have to be your day to start change? That is why we encourage you to start your fitness journey when it feels right for you. If you do feel that making a New Year’s Resolution and starting on January 1st, is the best for you, we support that too! In fact, our January Revolution’s Challenge, lets you choose the number of days, hours, or calories you want to commit to. Use this challenge to help you create a goal that matches your needs and current fitness.
Okay, so we are encouraging you to start, now what? It can feel daunting to set a time or distance goal when you may not know where your current fitness is at. If you have access to a Concept2 RowErg, just row! Sit down, strap your feet in, and begin rowing, you do not have to know how long you are going to go for, and you can let your body decide if it’s going to be a short day, or if you want to rack in the meters. The key is to just get started. The same applies for the SkiErg and BikeErg, just ski or just ride and simply start moving. Every workout counts. It does not have to be a personal record or something grand.
